Mrs. Stewart or “Lafette” as she was called by most, was born March 1, 1930, the only child of Handy “Bud” Lawrence and Florence Roach Lawrence. She was a gifted child who excelled scholastically and was
as a church member at Bethlehem Baptist Church of Brooksville. Everyone in her beloved Roach Family marveled at little “Lafette’s” brilliance and brightness. After graduating salutatorian from Moton High School in 1946 at age 16, she continued on to Bethune Cookman College, where she pledged A.K.A. Sorority and was a majorette in the marching band. She graduated at the top of her class in 1950 at age 20. She returned to Moton was a first year teacher in 1951.

In 1951, she married Henry “Champ” Stewart. This union produced 3 children, (the late) Dale Allyson Stewart, Beverly Gail Stewart Lee, and Thomas Dwayne Stewart, Sr. . As a couple they owned several local businesses and in 1963, built one of the most unique and innovative homes of that era. It stood as a landmark symbol of African American success for decades.

As a teacher and educator, she helped numerous people with writing, income taxes, business and law, scholarships, and sometimes their personal life. She founded and chaired several groups and committees throughout her 40 plus years of devoted service to her beloved town of Brooksville.

In 1977, she moved to Tampa, Florida overcoming some personal hardships, being of great pride and character, she continued and finished her tenure as a teacher at Hernando High School, retiring in 1986. She stayed connected to the Brooksville Community through varies social clubs and church associations. She was a driving force in the development of the Moton School Reunions. She became a long standing member in her new church; The First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace, FL. A devoted Christian, she was blessed to visit numerous countries including Africa, and got to see the river Jordan, and the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Mrs. Stewart’s kindness and generosity will be sadly missed by many, but most of all, by her family.

She leaves to celebrate her transition to her new life; one devoted son, Thomas D. Stewart, Sr.; one loving daughter, Beverly Stewart Lee; seven grandchildren, Nina, Thomas, Jr., Tarron, Tiffany, Trés,  Tayla, and Sean; three great grandchildren, Thomas III (Tip), Aailiyah, and Taevon; one special niece, Mrs. Jacqueline Raines of Daytona; special friends, Mrs. Ira B.
