Charlie J. Martin
Brother Charlie J. Martin was born on October 20, 1926, at Wildwood, Sumter County, Florida. Charlie departed this life on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Brooksville, Florida. His parents were Charlie Joe Jerry Martin and Essie Wofford of Wildwood.
Charlie served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He received an Honorable discharge on January 29, 1947. After military service, Charlie resided in Brooksville and was employed by a company in Tampa, at J.W. Connor and Sons, as a heavy equipment operator. This company constructed major highways and streets throughout the State of Florida. He remained with this company until his retirement.
Charlie married Carrie Belle Land, a Brooksville native, in a beautiful wedding held at the bride’s residence, 203 Daniel Avenue. The wedding ceremony was performed on June 30, 1957.
Charlie became a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church on the first Sunday in January, 2002. He was later baptized by the Pastor, Rev. C. A. Hubbert. He became an active member of the Missions Ministry and faithfully attended weekly meetings and activities.
He will be remembered for his friendliness and personality. He enjoyed passing out candy to adults and children.
Brother Martin leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 53 years, Carrie Belle; two daughters, Joyce Ann Morris (Bill) of Sanford, Florida and Olivia Crawford of Wildwood, Florida; one nephew, Albert Jackson (Dessie) of Wildwood, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Etta Perry and Hazel M. Land of Brooksville, Florida; five grandchildren, great-grandchildren, grand-nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends both black and white.
A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
