
Obituary for ELIJAH JOHN "CHIEF" BENNETT
Elijah John “ Chief” Bennett was born on March 8, 1942 in Savannah, Georgia and his family moved to Brooksville, Florida in 1946. Elijah graduated from Moton High School in 1961. He worked on the railroad, camps Mining and Mackle Brothers. He was a charter member of the Hernando County Branch NAACP. Elijah accepted Christ and joined Bethlehem Progressive Baptist Church at an early age. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1967 and served on year, 11 months and 29 days. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Elijah earned the following medals: Vietnam Service, 2 Bronze Stars, National Defense Service, Republic of Vietnam Campaign, Combat Infantryman Badge, Marksman (M-16), Army Commendation, Sharp Shooter (M-16), Expert (M-60mm), and Air Medal. Elijah was a disabled veteran. Elijah was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Edna Bennett; brothers Ronald Rudolph Bennett and Ernest Paul Walker; sisters Mary Ann and Sharon Delores Bennett. He leaves to mourn his passing : wife, Joann; daughter, Rene Young (Michael); sons, Michael Bennett and Frederick “Ricky” Bennett (Barbara); brothers, Myers and Imani Asukile (Angela); sister, Vera McKenzie; uncle, Elliot Bryant (Nodder) (Savannah, GA); three aunts, Mattie Busby ( Estill, SC), Maggie Russell (Savannah, GA) and Gladys Simon (Thomasville, GA); family friends, sisters Lizzy Moore and Mary Rofile; thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, sorrowing relatives and friends.
