Obituary for ETHEL LEE DELAINE
Ethel Lee Johnson
(Williams) Delaine
Ethel Lee Johnson (Williams) was born March 25, 1923 in Mascottee, Florida and was delivered by her Midwife maternal grandmother Evalina Bailey Brown Tucker. Her parents Tennie Brown Johnson and Isaac Williams predeceased her. She attended public schools in Clermont and Brooksville, Florida for six years.
She was first married to Jonathan Hart and within this marriage two daughters were born, Thelma Marie and Vivian who was stillborn. She was the wife of James Delaine for 62 years. She reared her two step-sons James (Pete) and Leon as her own.
She became a Believer in Christ Jesus at an early age. She was an ardent worker in her churches and in her community. Her longest tenure in a church family was at the Leonard Street Church of God. It was her habit to drive around gathering children of family and friends to transport them to Sunday school, church and youth meetings. She visited the sick, and prayed fervent prayers for them. She served in a number of roles, including recording and financial secretary, treasurer, Bible teacher, choir member, and Mother of the Church. When she was able she attended National Baptist and Church of God conferences and conventions in Florida and other states.
        Â
Bible study sessions were held in her home. She once was part of multi-racial interdenominational women’s bible study group who called themselves the Bible Brunch Bunch. She once commented that they often brunched more than they bible studied! Ethel Lee was a candid, no non-sense Christian, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, great aunt cousin and friend.
She was a domestic and hotel worker in Lakeland, Clermont and Brooksville, Florida. Her duties often included caring for children. She worked as a salad maker at the Florida Hotel in Lakeland, Florida. In her youthful years, she and her then sister-in-law, Minnie Delaine collaborated and operated a laundry service business for families in Brooksville.
Other immediate family members who predeceased her include: sisters, Thelma Ree Joel (Grant), Lee W. Lowndes (Julius), Mabel W. Royal (George); brothers, James Miller Johnson (Doris)(Jeanette), Julius Johnson (Irene)(Almary), James C. Williams, Lenon C. Williams, and son, Leon Delaine.
