Obituary for Idella Benjamin
Idella Benjamin was born in Selma, Alabama on August 3, 1948, to the late Mary Mathis. She attended Moton High School. Idella acquired her God given gift of sewing while in Mrs. Floyds class. She excelled in her craft quickly. Idella enjoyed making dresses and suits. She was considered one of the best seamtress in town. Idella met, courted and subsequently married the love of her life, Byron Benjamin. They were united in Holy Matrimony on March 5, 1976. Together her and Byron, along with her mother-in-law, sister, brother-in-law formed a group called The Family Gospel Singers. They traveled many cities and ministered in song.
Idella was a dutiful employee at Moton Elementary School, serving both as a teacher’s aide and a custodian. She retired in 1997. She was also a lifelong member of the Spirit of Life Church of God where she ministers and co-pastors. On July 1, 2016 Idella entered a peaceful rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She leaves to mourn a loving, faithful and devoted husband, Byron Benjamin; five children, Jonathan Pernell Mathis, Avis Latoya Mathis, Joel Trenton Mathis (Tyiesha), Byron Benjamin, Jr. (deceased), Sean Jeremiah Benjamin and Shayne Emmanuel Benjamin; eight grandchildren; three brothers, William Mathis (Joy), Henry Mathis, Jr. (Laura Mae) and Albert Mathis (Yulonda); three sisters, Geraldine Carr (John), Verna Ware and Cynthia Munford (Jeffery); also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
