John’s Biographical Sketch

 
The passing of John L. Cox called us together today. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 7:58 p.m. God called him to come home. John L. Cox was born on September 21, 1937 to late Essie B. Cox in Midway, AL. He accepted Christ at an early age at St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Midway, AL. At the age of 17, John L. decided to venture out on his own, and he moved to Brooksville, FL. While living in Brooksville, FL, he joined Allen Temple A.M.E. Church where he dutifully served as a Trustee and sang on the Male Choir. He was also a member of the Frederick Kelly Elks Lodge, former Brooksville Men’s Club, and NAACP.

John L. was preceded in death by his mother Essie B. Tarver, father Lawrence Tarver, Sr., and two younger brothers Lawrence Tarver, Jr. and Ernest Tarver.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 38.5 years, Virginia Harris Cox; two loving daughters, Mashell Cox and Emily Cox both of Carrollton, TX; one sister, Catherine Anderson (Robert) of Goldsboro, NC; one sister-in-law, Erma J. Tarver of Hurtsboro, AL; one aunt, Dorothy Lee Anthony of Unions Springs, AL;  a mother-in-law, Rosie Lee Harris of Union Springs, AL; six brothers-in-law, Tommie Harris, Jr. (Lucy), Robert Harris of (Susie) of Phenix City, AL, Earnest Harris (Jewel) of Columbus, GA, Clayton Harris (Brenda), Eddie Harris (Kara) and Rodell Harris (Felicia) of Montgomery, AL; six sisters-in-law, Bobbie Goshay (JB), Nellie Tarver of Columbus, GA, Rosa Harris of Montgomery, AL, Mary Ann Harris of Columbia, MD, Sarah West (Arnold) of Rahway, NJ and Linda Harris of Union Springs, AL.

Children of his siblings Linda Tarver, Sandra Yoba (Amard), Tracy Tarver (Joyce) of Hursboro, AL, and Nicole Anderson of Goldsboro, NC. Two fond cousins, Elouise Sellers of Midway, AL and Sarah Nell Long of Orlando, FL. Also a host of other loving relatives.

By marriage he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members to cherish his memories.
