Our beloved “Auntie”, Marie Lousie (Vaughns) Collins, age 101, died peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2015 in Timber Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had received loving and caring attention over the past two years.
She was born in Dunnellon, FL on April 10, 1913 and still had possession of the small property on which she was born at the time of her death. She was the daughter of he late Hilliard Vaughns and Arleen (Haynesworth) Vaughns. She was the wife of the late Dolvin C. Collins. Although she had no children of her own, she and Mr. Collins  raised three nieces , Allie Mae (Williams) McCone, Arlean Hattie (Williams) Cunningham and Catherine “Honey Pie” Williams. All have preceded her in death. She also raised Demetrius Joshua who resides in New Jersey. She is also preceded in death by her sisters, Beatrice (Vaughns) Williams  and Elsie (Vaughns) Nunn and her brother, Fred Vaughns. From the time she was a young girl, education and faith were cornerstones of her life. She instilled these important foundations in her family. Mother Collins accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of First Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Later she joined Second Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, were she served faithfully until her death. As a young woman she attended Florida Normal then located in Daytona Beach Florida. She also received informal nursing training which she utilized many years at Citrus Memorial Hospital. She also worked for many years as a supervisor of housekeeping at the Dinner Bell. Her most important and memorable accomplishment was her over fifty years of directing choirs and playing for various churches in the Dunnellon community. She was known far and wide for her powerful singing voice and excellent piano playing. She loved hymns and instrumental in teaching many their first gospel song. During her final days, she was heard singing loudly, Draw Me Nearer Precious Lord. She was known not only as Auntie, but also as Mother Collins. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and church family. She will be greatly missed.
