Obituary for Orbary Sr. McKinnon
Obituary
Orbary McKinnon, Senior
A limb has fallen from our tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter and the song. I’m counting on you to keep smiling and the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease and my soul is at rest; and remembering all, how I was truly blessed.
Death is just a detour along life’s wind way that leads God’s children to a bright and glorious day. The book of life opened for Orbary McKinnon, Sr. On December 6, 1931. He was the fourth child born to Fred Douglas McKinnon, Sr. and Ada Elliott McKinnon in Apalachicola, Florida.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorship of Reverend G. W. Dobson. He received the baptism of the holy spirit in the year of our Lord 1956.
He attended the public schools in Citrus County, to include George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington High School. He eventually graduated from Dunnellon High School.
He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Davis on December 27, 1950. To this union six children were born, Sylvia McKinnon-Wade (who proceeded him in death), Cornel Joe Parker, Orbary McKinnon, Jr. (who also proceeded him in death), Marunda Vida McKinnon-Denson, Tammy P. McKinnon and Warren D. McKinnon.
He was drafted into the United States Army. While in the Army he received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean War Service Medal and A Good Conduct Medal. He received An Honorable Discharge from the United States Army in 1956.
After his military discharge, he served as a professional chef/cook at the following facilities: Highland Country Club, Highland North, Carolina, Port Paradise and Plantation Inn of Crystal River, Florida.
He joined The Independent House of God, Which is the Church of the Living God, Pillar and Ground of the Truth 1963 under the pastorship of Elder Shepard Green. Some of his duties included: Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent for nine years, Sunday School Teacher of the adult class for five years and Vice President of the Pastor’s Aide Board for five years.
He was well loved by family and friends. On the morning of October 18, 2015, Orbary heard the voice of Jesus say “Come To Me All Ye That Labor and Are Heavy Laden and I Will Give You Rest.” Left with loving memories and great expectations of meeting him again are: a devoted and beloved wife of sixty-four years and ten months, Wife, Betty Davis-McKinnon; His Children, Cornel Joe Parker (Debra) Of Des Moines Iowa; Marunda V.
