Sister Sarah L. Key was born and reared in Richlong, Florida. She attended the public schools in Sumter County where she successfully completed the 11th grade.
February 14, 1946 she was united in marriage to Mr. James Key, Sr. They moved to Hernando, FL and later to Inverness to find employment.
She was raised in the church by a loving family and her dad was a preacher. Later she joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, under the pastorate of W. B. Burney. Sister Key truly devoted herself to the support of her church by cooking and selling food to raise funds for the building and other events. Many pastors later, she was pastored by Rev. Leroy E. Jones, whom she loved and adopted unofficially as her son.

Don’t grieve for me, for now, I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all.
