Vera Elizabeth Bennett-McKenzie

Vera Elizabeth Bennett-McKenzie was born August 26, 1951 in Brooksville, Florida to the union of Reverend Elijah and Edna Bennett.

Vera accepted Christ at an early age at Bethlehem Progressive Baptist Church in Brooksville, Florida where she sang in the choir and was active in the youth department. Later, she moved her membership to Holy Band Deliverance Temple, Inc., and after moving to Atlanta, she joined Zion Hill Baptist Church. She volunteered for the Minster-Layman Alliance of Hernando County as a Vacation Bible School teacher.

Vera attended Hernando County Schools and furthered her education at Atlanta Technical College, earning her an associates degree in early childhood education. Her calling was helping others, she was a magnificent foster parent. Vera was well respected and loved as head cook at Camp E-How-Kee and as well as Springstead High School. She served in the medical field at Lykes Memorial Hospital as a phlebotomist. Vera was a volunteer at Ameri Corps of Hernando County. Sewing and ceramics were two of her favorite hobbies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Ernest Paul Walker, Ronald Rudolph, Sharon Deloris, Mary Ann, Elijah John, Myles Graham. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Tara Lyons ( Robert) Atlanta, GA; Monica Burnett-Warthen, Brooksville, FL; Grandchildren, Tiarra Jackson, D’Whitney, Omar Stephens, and Skyy Lyons; Great Grandchildren, Aaron Jackson and Ah’Neris McGhee; Husband, Michael McKenzie, Brooksville; Brother Imani Asukile (Angela) Dade City, Florida; aunts, Mattie Busby, Rincon, GA; Maggie Russell, Savannah, GA; Gladys Simon, Thomasville, GA; Sister-in-laws: Sarah Bennett , Joann Bennett, Brooksville, FL and Angela Lewis-Bennett, Dade City, FL; and Mattie Bennett., Tampa, FL; a host of nephews, nieces. Vera treasured the special relationships with Mother Emma Lou Walker, Sisters: Doretha Ware, Evangelist Johnnie Ruth Griffin, Dr. Sharon Vickers, Sister Jeanette Hines, Angela Theodore; Barbara Ann Williams and Brother Eric Theodore.
